MANAGEMENT AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE
The Police Services Section within the Division of Criminal Justice
assists local law enforcement by combining the development of law
enforcement policy and standards with the provision of technical
assistance to address specific needs within individual agencies.
Standards and operational guidelines are developed in areas such
as internal affairs, police vehicular pursuit, and the use of force.
These standards and mandatory guidelines serve as a means of implementing
legislation, Attorney General directives, and other applicable policies
and are intended to promote uniform and effective law enforcement
and efficient police administration.
Many
representatives of the Police Services Section are experienced law
enforcement professionals who work in conjunction with deputy attorneys
general from the Prosecutors Supervision & Coordination Bureau within
the Division of Criminal Justice to provide operational and legal
advice to police and other law enforcement administrators throughout
the State.
The
Police Services Section conducts police management training programs,
provides general and agency specific management and technical assistance,
and conducts management studies of individual law enforcement agencies.
In addition, the Police Services Section maintains the RADAR operator
and instructor certification program.
The
Law Enforcement Agency Standards program, developed in conjunction
with the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police, is designed
to assist police executives to effectively organize and manage the
operation of their respective agencies, to provide quality police
services, and to address community needs. This voluntary program
consists of standards in areas of agency operations such as policy
management, records management, communications, personnel practices,
and media relations.
The
Police Services Section is responsible for publishing the New Jersey
Law Enforcement Guidelines, a compilation of existing directives
and guidelines pertaining to police agencies in New Jersey. The
Guidelines are intended to serve as a convenient resource for all
law enforcement personnel throughout New Jersey and are available
on this web site.
